About SOLAR Lab

The Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab helps schools adopt well-established, scientific approaches to help children learn how to read.

You can learn about some of the work of the SOLAR Lab by watching this 2-minute video, produced in 2024.

SOLAR Lab was established in 2020 by Professor Pamela Snow and Professor Tanya Serry.

We promote the role of oral language in the development of reading skills across the pre-school to secondary years. We use the term “reading” to specifically identify core skills in text decoding and language comprehension that also promote success in writing and spelling.

Our research emphasises interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers, policy-makers, teachers and allied health professionals, such as speech-language pathologists and psychologists. We promote the efficient translation of new knowledge into classroom practice and encourage the de-implementation of practices that are not supported by empirical evidence.
